Post 4: 'Tis the Season to Believe

anxiety depression Dec 05, 2019

Delightful anticipation filled my youthful heart every Christmas Eve as I perched in front of my bedroom window. My gaze was transfixed on the collection of red lights of the nearby airport.  I was convinced one of those lights had to be Rudolf’s nose.  My eyes became sleepy searching for movement that would signal Santa’s imminent arrival.  The power of belief enveloped my brain.

 The Purpose of Belief

Belief vanquishes anxiety, providing comfort and security in the knowledge that everything is going to happen exactly as intended.  Beliefs do not require total proof.  Belief makes you feel part of something bigger.  It will light your life even during your darkest moments.

Believing is a powerful mental ability.

 Belief as a Choice

Beliefs are changeable and completely customizable.  Your brain is the artist.  Over the years your brain has created many belief paintings.  I invite you to take a peek at your belief art gallery.

How would you describe your collection? Is it representative of you today? Is it serving you well and enabling you to have the life you always wanted?

2 years ago I felt shackled to a barrage of self-defeating beliefs.  Although it appeared I had a great life, I was struggling to keep my head above water.  With compassion, I recorded my belief inventory, all 6 pages of it!

My list was dismal.  No wonder I was feeling hopeless and deflated.

I reminisced about my feelings as a child, holding vigil with airport lights.  I believed. I resisted doubt as long as I could, but I inevitably gave into the choice of disbelief via peer pressure.  Disbelief is a belief.

We can believe anything we want.  All that stands in the way is our own choice.

 Be Your Own Belief Artist

The power of possibility is yours!  Scrutinize your belief inventory.  It may be time to retire, renovate or reintroduce some pieces.

Wonder, imagine, and envision what you want to believe.   Allow it to flow freely from you as you sculpt, swirl, and sway your opinions about yourself.  Behold, your old beliefs will fade as new beliefs emerge.  Design it.  Feel it.  Be part of something bigger than yourself.

Don’t worry about the how.  The belief needs to happen first.  Once belief exists, in the absence of disbelief, the how will be revealed effortlessly.

A Belief Art Gallery You Love

Like any great art gallery, you will want to stay current and fresh.  After months of intentional belief renovation, I love my belief art gallery.  Some pieces served their purpose well and have been retired.  Others went through a complete overhaul and are now the best beliefs ever.

The toughest to discard were the beliefs gifted to me by others.  I was racked with guilt until I realized that we are all allowed to have different beliefs and still care about each other.   Art Galleries can exist side by side, each with completely different art, and still be uniquely wonderful and appreciated.
